Steam is an absolute nightmare to use
I kind of wish everyone would just use itch instead of Steam. It's a nightmare to use, it's expensive, and really the only thing it adds to the experience is their whole achievements system. Personally, even as a game player I prefer itch's set up for buying and playing games (I don't care about achievements, natch). But when it comes to uploading and selling games? Itch is much more preferred. Steam is a NIGHTMARE. I've only had issue after issue, and now a bug in Steam's system is keeping it from going live on steam, AND they haven't responded to any of my inquires. Looks like they just took my hundred bucks and are laughing about it.
If it weren't *the* platform joe schmoe common gamer used, I wouldn't even bother with Steam.
On the plus side, I think I have my next game idea. A massive JRPG that takes place in a sprawling victorian city. Think Mieville's Perdido Street Station or Vandermeer's Ambergis books, or even Gormenghast. It will have that look and feel, but combined with a jrpg, and gigantic. No overworld map, it all takes place in the city, and the city will be as large as most JRPG's themselves. Sprawling, mamoth, multi-tiered. Think how A Link to the past does dungeons, but instead of one or two layers to walk between, you have 5 or 6 or 12. Each layer being a different sprawling area, with bridges between buildings, being able to shimmy up drain pipes, climb on roofs, jump from house to house.
It will take a lot of work, but oh my. It will be fantastic.

I love your new game idea !! But I'm also a fan of Victorian era fufufu~
I understand how you feel about Steam...Their search engine is handy, complete but the rest of the website is messy and unnecessarily complicated. I'm only a player, so I don't know anything about the troubles of uploading a game on the platform but I feel like it's legit. Steam is just useful to easily find the popular games and their website is protected so you know you can buy something on it with a bit of peace in mind. :') But I would much prefer using Itchio rather than Steam, I even think there's a way better ambience! The only problem I have with itchio that I don't really have on Steam is the languages. I'm French and I like to play games with my dad and discuss it with him. But he doesn't really like to read in English, especially the evening, so it must be in french. But I never managed to find a French game on the site...Maybe I didn't look search enough but for now, I'm kind of stuck with Steam on this point... x_x
Anyway, I wish you a good day, stay productive, happy, you're awesome!
Thank you so much! And yeah, I had not thought of the languages! You're very right about that. And there are benefits to steam, other than that. It's just not an ideal from a developer's point of view. But I will always release on both, too many people just prefer steam. But Itch will always be my favorite, so I will always release here as well.
